- NOAA has issued a Hurricane watch for Cancun south of Tulum. It’s possible that the current tropical depression could increase to hurricane status by Saturday, the possible time frame of it hitting land. We will keep you posted after the storm has passed if there is any major damage.
- You can now purchase Covid 19 travel insurance. There are several insurance companies if you google “Covid 19 travel insurance”. Lloyds underwrites some of them and the cost that ranges from $250 – $300 for a thirty-day policy with a $250 deductible. You must purchase an insurance policy before your departure and before a positive Covid 19 test.
- Cancun, Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The state of Quintana Roo began the week of August 17, 2020 with the lowest number of new Covid-19 infections in three months. In a 24-period, the state recorded only 29 new cases and three deaths. All three deaths were recorded in Cancun. To date, Quintana Roo has recorded 9,326 positive cases and 1,224 deaths related to COVID-19. The state epidemiological light, which is effective until August 30, remains orange even though the rate of infections has decreased. It may soon be able go to a yellow light classification where hotels, restaurants, and other tourist activities will be able to have 50% occupancy. Currently, the orange light classification only allows 30% occupancy.
- International and domestic flight arrivals and departures are increasing every week with over fifty international flights and departures the first week of August. Occupancy for Cancun and the Riviera Maya stand at an average of close to 30% for the same period. Campeche, the bordering state of Quintana Roo went to a yellow light classification.
- Cancun created a Covid Reaction Police team that began operating August 3rd gives out tickets with a fine attached for those who are not wearing face-masks while in a public establishment. They are not supposed to give out a ticket while driving in a vehicle on public roads, but if you are in a taxi, you definitely want to wear one to protect yourself from someone prior to you who may have been Covid 19 positive.
